creating samba shares
« on: December 16, 2000, 01:51:01 AM »
I am looking to create a share for a group of users, and I would prefer not to have the three directories in the share folder that the wedadmin creates.  If I want to create my own samba shares are there any specifics I need to know that are related to the e-smith server.  Im assuming I just cant modify the /etc/e-smtih/templates/10globals file.  If anyone knows how to do this I would highly appreciate it.

Jason,

that's definitely a bad place for any user modifications. These are the original e-smith files that you are going to change. No control for you (or them) to separate original files or content from modifications.

Have a look at the e-smith.org website. There are pages with very good explanations about customizing the system and one example is exactly for Samba modifications.

Basically you will copy the standard templates in a new directory and do all your modifications there. Once that (copy) is done, I would *not* put my own share definitions into the 10globals file. That file is for Samba's global definitions. I would create a new file (ie. 61myshare) for your new share(s) but that is just my personal preference only.

If you have applied the 4.0.1 update (and everyone should!), then you don't need to copy the standard templates. Just create the new fragment (e.g. "61myshare") under the templates-custom heirarchy.

Looks like we need to update our documentation to make this clear.

Thanks for that hint, I hadn't realised that you can do it that way.
Now I am going to tidy up my modifications.... and reduce it just to the modified or added fragments only.
