Topic: can't login to root locally

yesterday i had my excellent e-smith server online. then i got a few of these errors:

IP_MASQ:reverse ICMP: failed checksum from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx!


then i went to sleep, and today i can't login to root locally... but i can still access the server via ssh from a computer on my lan.

could anyone here point me to the direction of the login logs or maybe tell me if it's feacible someone could have accessed the server from the internet and maybe denied local access for the root user?

everytime i try to access the server locally it just does the usual greeting ...

and then the cursor hangs... no bash prompt.

I've only ever seen this message on a network connection that is up and down a lot.  What kind of connection do you have?

When you say locally, do you mean at the console?  Can you ssh as root from your LAN?

/var/log/messages will show logins as root.

Can you provide more details about your current setup and configuration?
