from my provider I get a dynamic ip-address ... did I understand right, that this is already assigned via dhcp (never thought of it) or is there another path to get it?

Thanks

You understand right.

If your ISP is providing you with a dynamic IP, your e-smith server is the DHCP client, and ISP provides a DHCP server on their end.  There are no other supported means of getting a dynamic IP for the server other than DHCP.

Sorry to contradict you Paul, but if the ISP link is a PPP (or PPPoE link with ADSL), then the IP can also be dynamically allocated, and the protocol used is actually IPCP.

In short, DHCP will be used for allocating dynamic IPs if you have a connection by router or cable modem, or IPCP if you use some form of PPP.

how can I correctly use e-smith if it only offers to get the IP via DHCP or define a static-IP???

Thanks for your answers.
