I want to move to e-smith but the existing email server allows the use of mailing lists. For example, there is an address "salespeople@mycompany.com" that distributes the mail to all the members of that list.

Will a group accomplish this? In other words, does a group have an email adress? Also, the address would need to turn up in an LDAP search.

I have some Linux experience so I would not mind doing this around the e-smith templates, if someone can point me in the right direction.

Yes.

Yes, assuming your search criteria include the "group" objectClass.
