Peter:
This is a subject you'll have to arrange with your ISP, but as far as I know, is not possible to have a static ip address with a  dialup internet access.
At least, here we can't.
You have this two methods

If your ISP could determine or see your modem mac address and modify the settings to asign to this mac always the same IP you're done....! (could be very hard to acomplish)

If you're connected 24 hs a day you already have a static ip address while you stay connected. (depending on your phone rates It could be really expensive)

Solution: get a static connection (asdl; cable, etc) but you still have to ask your isp for a static ip

Hope it helps

We used to have one. It can be arranged with some ISPs, to have dedicated number and IP address and also ISP dialing you back "on demand".
In most areas today its not worth it anymore. Broadband connections (if available in you area) will be much cheaper and faster.

Both Telstra and Optus in Australia offer untimed access via a dial-up line. These services are designed for moderate web and mail services and are the most economical way to privide a pernenant web presence in Australia.
You only have to dial up when a connection is lost. It is intended that the line stay connect at all times. We do not pay metered costs for these calls. just a one off cost each call (18c).
The ISPs provide a fixed IP and you are calling an modem at the ISP dedicated for your use only.
It would be nice to see an option in the dial-up menu to set fixed IP if required. Maybe it could be included in a future e-smith release.
This would follows the general e-smith concept and same meddling with templates.

The ISP should be providing the correct fixed IP via the IPCP protocol which is part of PPP. Both Optus and Telstra are capable of doing this. Complain to them if they don't do it for you.

Nevertheless, we are listening to you and will try to provide the option, without unnecessarily complicating the interface for those who don't need the option.

could a dynamic IP service such as DynDNS give you a workaround?
