ADSL changes IP without rebooting

ADSL changes IP without rebooting
« on: April 21, 2001, 07:24:33 AM »
I've been monitoring my dynamically assigned IP address over the past few weeks. It is definitely changing every 2 to 6 days without rebooting the server.  as far as I can tell there is no script that runs regularly to check if the IP has changed so that the dynamic dns scripts can be re-run.   I've also done a search on the phorums and haven't turned up anything on this topic.

I'm thinking of runing a cron job that checks for IP address change hourly and then runs my tzo dyndns script (plus re-runs my portforwarding commands), but I don't want to reinvent the wheel if someone has already experienced this problem and come up with something that works.

Thanks in anticipation.

FYI my ADSL provider is Telstra Australia, my E-Smith 4.1 server has been up for 18 days and has been issued 4 IP addresses in that period.

Check /etc/ppp/ip-up.local, and /etc/e-smith/events/ip-up/*
and /etc/e-smith/events/ip-change/*. If you think there's something wrong, please report it to bugs@e-smith.com.

Thanks

Graeme:
I have an "allways on" connection from Millicom (Broadband wireless access) "always on" in this case means almost always on;-) (is even worst in heavy rain days)
My ip changes whenever my isp wants (as it is a really new service in town it has a lot of very short interruptions) but  my e-smith box is taking this very good, whenever my IP changes , my box runs all scripts needed to enable the new IP, also it sends the IP change to dyndns.org and keeps my name linked with my IP.
(my e-smith is 4.1.1 "secured")

Thanks for the feedback.

Examining my system log I notice that at the last IP change all these IP-change events happened, except for my tzo redhat script, which outputs spurious html (instead of the expected confirmation of IP update). Time to install Charlie's port fwd module.

Don't know what to do about the rhtzo script tho -  everyone who's tried to help has the script working ok, but it's never worked properly for me.

I don't know if this is related or not, but I recently built a custom script using HammerNode, and had a similar-sounding problem. In my case, the script had been pasted in from an email, and a single line had been made into two, so that I had a spurious CR/LF in the file. Joining the lines approporiately fixed the problem.

a case of one step back two steps forward this morning, which is a nice reversal.
Alejandro's post reminded me to check the basics again, and sure enough I found an error in the script - the tzo email address was missing a character!

Rebooting the server however failed - dead motherboard! Replacement machine cooked up in a hurry, swapped network cards across and - success - /var/log/messages now reports successfullly updating the IP address to TZO.  Thanks everyone for your input.

Now to install the ip forward module ...

TZO, DYNDNS, YI... which one to choose?

Hello all,

I have *at last* have gotten the Alcatel SpeedTouch Pro to work with e-Smith. (I have discovered that you MUST set it as a DHCP server - from http://10.0.0.138 initially) and set eth1 on e-Server to have a static DNS, then change that to PPPoE!! - now it works.

My question now is, which dynamic dns service is recommended here? I have seen some talk about TZO, some about DYDNS.com/org. It seems to me that the majority uses TZO?

How do you rate these services and which one should I go with?

Please also let me know if I have to run the service's own .pl files on cron to get it to work, or are these scripts built into e-Smith (as the config is precoded for the 4 services above?)

I would appreciate your comments (hopefully I'll get a quick reply for this one!) so that I can commit to the service.

Please send me any comments you have even if negative, but I would rather base my decision on experience rather than regret it later...

regards
Mahmood

It works!

I am happy to say that the Alcatel SpeedTouch Pro coupled with dyndns.com works perfectly and it changes and tracks IP changes without my intervention (eS version 4.1.2)

Now the other topic... as I intend to host several sites on eS, I have already created several virtual hosts and mapped them to appropriate iBays, how would I go about configuring dyndns service to map a particular IP to a particular site?
