I just got an alcatel speed touch home adsl modem (yippee) and service. I set up my e-smith server for my little network (4.1.1)

The bad thing is this.... pppoe times out on boot. The configuration settings are pretty easy to deal with, but it just doesn't work. Of course bell south doesn't tell me anything worth while once they hear the word 'linux' so I can't get any help there.

I just downloaded the iso of 4.1.2 and was hoping that would work. I would really appreciate any help I can get on this one. It seems like it shouldn't be hard to do... and it seems like it is close to connecting, but somehow it just doesn't.

As the Alcatel STH can be used both in PPPoE or PPTP, are you sure everything is in PPPoE (your connection to the ISP and your modem).

For the modem, have a look on its configuration :
ifconfig eth0 10.0.0.10 mask 255.0.0.0  (if your ethernet card is eth0)
With any Web browser, go to http://10.0.0.138
Go to the Phonebook (left menu)
There, you should have a row yellow overlined. If the Type is br, you should be in PPPoE.

I used the STH in PPTP for months and now in PPPoE and i've never noticed any problem with it and e-smith.

frank,

thanks for the reply - does this mean that I can set the modem to whichever setting I choose, ie. PPPoE? Is that how that modem works?

I'm far from being a specialist in modem configuration, but in France we can use PPTP or PPPoE.
Here, the STH is preconfigured to use PPTP but many people change the settings to use PPPoE because it is more flexible (Windows, Linux, BeOS, MacOS, etc.)

I explain on my own site how to switch it from PPTP to PPPoE with screen captures.

There are many other things you can do (reboot via Telnet for exemple) but i don't know exactly what it is possible to do.
You should read the manual of the modem to discover that.

Sorry for my english...

Hi Franck,

I have the Alcatel SpeedTouch Pro - the Phonebook highlight is in br so it should work with PPPoE, however, I do not know what to do to get it to work and would appreciate your help in setting it up. I have the following set up:

          ATM side  --         adsl       --        eth1    --     eth0
      <172.16.1.1> -- < 10.0.0.138> -- <10.0.0.1> -- <192.168.0.1>

I can ping 172.16.1.1, 10.0.0.138 but cannot go out to the internet. I have set e-Smith to be a Server and Gateway and the access method is PPPoE and have set the username and password, but cannot get access.

could it be that the telco has changed the default 172.* address to their own? How can I find out that information (the telco staff don't know!!)

appreciate your help in this.

regards
Mahmood

Configuration in France :
ISP -- phone line -- modem -- eth1 -- e-smith -- eth0 -- LAN
We don't use the ATM protocol.

If you use PPPoE, U don't need to have an IP @ on eth1 : ppp0 has the IP @ provided by your ISP.
If U want to access you modem (STH), eth1 must have an IP @ as 10.0.0.0/255.0.0.0 and access to the modem by its own IP @ : 10.0.0.138

I don't understand how your modem is connected to your provider. Do you use a phone line or a specialised line.
Are you sure you can use PPPoE to connect to your ISP ?
