Problems with 4.1.1 backup/restore
« on: May 08, 2001, 12:48:10 PM »
Hello,

I am trying to move an 4.1.1 e-smith server to new hardware.  I am also taking advantage of the opportunity and going to 4.1.2.  I have done this many times with no glitches, but it is not going well at all this time.

I did the "standard" backup to desktop of the old box, did a fresh install of 4.1.2 on the new box, and attempted to restore from desktop to that new box.  Should work, but doesn't.  My desktop is a Win2K box.  When I try with IE, after I hit restore I see about a minute of activity on the ethernet hub, then it stops.  The screen never changes.  When I try with Netscape, Netscape locks up almost immediately (no ethernet activity at all).

I have tried redoing the backup many times, including shrinking it from 2 gig to 250 Meg by killing a bunch of files that I already have copies of (mostly a bunch of MP3s).  Nothing seems to work.

I tried opening the bak file (renaming to a uue, then opening in Winzip).  WInzip uudecodes it apparently fine, but the resulting file is "unknown.001" not the esmithsg.xtar I expected.  When I try to open that file, it chokes.  Not sure if this is just an anomaly or a clue.

I tried a similar thing on an e-smith box, uudecoding the file.  This time it does come up as esmithsg.xtar, and I am able to "tar tf esmithsg.xtar" and see a listing of the files.

One possible clue I should mention is that there are a BOATLOAD of files (33,671 to be exact) and don't know if that might be the issue.  These are almost entirely email files (one of the downsides of MailDir format), most real small.

Another note is I did try to restore the file to a 4.1.1 box I had laying around....same problem.

Sorry for all the gook above, just wanted to lay out my situation and what I have tried.  I have a couple questions based on the above:

- Any idea what is happening here?
- As a hack can I just copy the file over and untar it from root on the fresh server and go from there?  Or is there a CLI utility I should use to "properly" install this restore tar?
- Should I try this from a Linux box (I do have a RH 7.0 box I could fire up and try with I guess)?

Any help is appreciated.  I have killed pretty much a full day futzing with this to no avail (I am back on my old server) so have pretty much given up.

Regards,

JP
