SMTP server from outside LAN
« on: May 17, 2001, 12:07:28 PM »
I have just installed e-smith 4.1.2 and I want to do a simple thing like send mail from an email client located outside my firewall but I keep getting "sorry xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx I don't allow unauthorized relaying etc..." from the SMTP server.

From what I have read so far I need to alter the template file either host.allow or host.deny but I had a look at them in pico and couldn't work out what to do. Can anyone out there give me specific advice on what file I need to edit and what to insert?

TIA

The userguide_devel.pdf says on pg 54

"Even with POP and IMAP configured for public access, users outside your local network are not able to send email using your server
as their SMTP host. Allowing this would open your server to abuse by spammers as a mail relay."

Cheers,

Andrew

I am also experiencing the same problem.

I have 4.1.1 Esmith server installed at my office and it works fine. When my
mktg guys go on tour and want to receive the mails they configure the
outlook client and do the dial up access and receive the mails but when they
want to send reply, SMTP is not allowing them to do so. They could able to
get success in sending mails by using the dialup connection ISP's  SMTP. But
whose SMTP we need to use in case of DSL connection.

Pls advise me in this.

Swamy

This is not a bug; it's a (very well-documented by now) feature.  SMTP should not be open to outside users, as this will allow spammers to hijack your system for sending spam.  The best solution is to send mail through the (DSL or dialup) ISP's SMTP server at whatever location you're at.

You could use https: webmail for those occasions.

I think the best solution would be to install a webmail-service located in an iBay accessible from the outside.

I am using a script called Mailman from Endymion which can be downloaded from their website at:

http://endymion.com/products/mailman/

It works great. Since it actually is located in the e-smith box you will not get any problems with sending/viewing mails.
