Accessing Linux hosts through e-smith VPN from Win2k
« on: June 12, 2001, 03:55:06 PM »
So I have got e-smith 4.1.2 up and running and I must say it is a treat! Very easy to get online.

I have a question about the remote access. I have set the e-smith server/gateway up at my office and it is all good. I have a win2k pc at home and i want to be able to connect to the office with vpn.

I have got this going with little effort and can ping windows machines in the office from home. I have a couple of linux boxes in the office and when I try and ping them from home through the vpn connection, it does not work. It gets a request timed out message.

The vpn connection works great for accessing windows hosts, but I cannot see any linux hosts.

I tried doing a search from my home pc connected to the e-smith gateway,  for a computer located in the office LAN, via the search for computer tool in win2k. I can locate windows pc's, but not the linux ones.

Has anyone seen this happen before?? I spent 3 hours this afternoon searching through the e-smith.org's bulletin boards...and found a few things that were almost similar....but no solution.

The other question I have is this. Is it possible to be able to connect to a Windows NT domain from a remote vpn connection via an e-smith gateway, and be able to log into the windows domain? Do you have to have the e-smith gateway set up as the PDC to do this?? I would really rather not have to use the e-smith as PDC, as I already have a WinNT PDC.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I am by no means a 'linux-guru' and will be greatful for any ideas someone may have.

TIA

How are you trying to connect to the linux computers?  Are you trying to ping them by name?  Try using the IP.  You will not be able to browse to the Linux boxes with Network Neighborhood unless you are running Samba on the Linux boxes and have it configured to be a part of that network.

If you already have a PDC running, just have the e-smith box join that network.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the reply.

OK so we have worked this out...when I connect to the e-smith via pptp, I am assigned an IP address by e-smith. It just so happens that the IP address e-smith was giving me was an IP address that was bound to a NIC on one of our Unix hosts within the LAN!!!

We have now set e-smith so that it has a permanent pool of IP addresses to use for incoming vpn clients.

cheers
