Dual Processor freezing.
« on: June 15, 2001, 03:58:38 AM »
If anybody has any ideas about this I would be interested to know. I have just set up 4.1.2 on a dual P3-450 tyan m/b, with 512m ram and 2x10g raid drives. With the smp kernal the box will freeze during booting at any stage, but with the uniprocessor kernal it will boot with no probs. I tried RH7.1 as a test and it worked fine on the smp kernal booting quite a bit faster also. I then went back to e-smith with a fresh install and removed one of the processors, and the smp kernal runs beautifully.I have know idea as to what the difference is. We were told that the processors were a matched set.
Thanks
Karl

well, did you look and see if the CPU's were, in fact, a matched set?  You need to check the stepping of the CPU's.  That could be your problem.  Also, check with Tyan for any issues, check the BIOS and make sure that you have the MPS version set to 1.4, and make sure that you don't need any kind of VRM to run duals.  Then see if you install another OS if the same problem comes up.  I doubt your problem is with e-smith (linux).  Loading another OS may give you more info on the problem, though.  This is more than likely a hardware issue and not software.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for you tips, I reinstalled a fresh install of R/H 7 and found the same probs. I did some further testing, ( swapping cpu's,ram, bios switches, etc), and found that one cpu was causing the P/C to freeze. It ran fine on the other by it's self. I believe that the faulty cpu was used previously  in a overclocking setup.
Again thanks
