Pinging between 2 pc's

OK guys please help me with this one

I have a E-smith box with a dial-up connection. The e-smith installation went smoothly, choosing a dial-up server/gateway, with an IP address of 192.168.1.1 (default). The network card detected corretly. If I check /var/log/messages it states that the eth0 interface came up correctly. When I try and ping my Windows 98SE box from the e-smith server, it says "From 192.168.1.1, destination host unreachable". My Windows box has an IP of 192.168.1.98, no gateway and no DNS setup.

Please help

Thanks

James

Hi

Did you check up the Subnet mask between these 2 pc. Did you try self pinging..i.e ping 192.168.1.1 from 192.168.1.1 machine. Pls make sure  your (physical) network connection.

Hi Swamy, thanks for the prompt reply

I'm using a crossover cable which I tested when I made it (yesterday), so I dont think this is the problem. I cant ping 127.0.0.1 and 192.168.1.1

The subnet mask on both PC's is 255.255.255.0

Another question on top of my orginal problem - where can I change these settings manually. Should I change them where I change them in a normal Linux distro, or does e-smith have a special place?

Thanks
James

The cross over calbe shoud work and that is not a problem. But how come you are unable to ping 127.0.0.1 and 192.168.1.1. It could be the problem of ur NIC card, pls check that.

If you want to change the settings then it is easy to do using the graphical admin tool on E-smith box.

Sorry Swamy

I made a typo - I CAN ping 192.168.1.1 and 127.0.0.1. Its only when I ping an external box (192.168.1.98) that I get the destinatino unreable error.

Thanks
