We have come upon a situation whereby we have installed E-smith server gateway and pointed the proxy to telstra's proxy. Effectively this gives us a cheaper download rate when files are being directed through the proxy and not direct. However this does not work correctly after examining our account we discovered the e-smith was not using the proxy and hence we were paying the premium $ for d/loads. You must configure the client browsers to access the proxy to gain the cheaper rates om d/loads

I presume you mean you've pointed e-smith to telstra's proxy?  You still need to point your pc browsers to the e-smith proxy, otherwise masquerading gives browsers on the network full direct internet connection.

The appropriate port is 3128
The e-smith proxy works for most services - see the manual for details.
