Topic: Compaq Server

Please help....
 I have tried everything I can to get the E-smith product to install on my newly purchased Compaq 4500 server....
  The smartstart cd's plus win2k and win98 all boot from cd properly.....
However put an e-smith cd in and it will not boot from cd....
Have tried going from boot disk and selecting Compaq array to no evail.....

I have used the cd to build e-smith on the current box I have, which is a normal PC... However I want the PC back and need to used the dedicated server for its assigned task... Though E-smith won't load on the bloody thing......


Help please anyone....

Have you had a look in the BIOS? With some of those Compaq servers you have to go into the BIOS and tell it what sort of OS you are going to run. Also, have you tried booting from a floppy? You can find instructions for creating a boot floppy here http://www.e-smith.org/docs/howto/contrib/ata100.txt

Some cd-rom drives in Compaq's are very sensitive.

I had the same problem with a Compaq ProLiant ML 370 and a Win2K CD.... the Win2k cd read fine in any other computer... except in the server cd-rom drive... after I burnt a new copy it worked fine...

I have been searching for how to do this, has anyone been able to install any flavor of linux on a compaq 4500 ? please let me know if you have.

I too would love to know.  I'd hate to think I've just bought a big boat anchor - even if it is a Fast SCSI Raid 5 Board Anchor....

Looks like its back to NT for that poor beast.
