How to use High Speed Internet Access & dial up/out?
« on: July 11, 2001, 05:49:16 AM »
Hi Folks,

I'm wondering if anyone has done this, knows how to do it or knows that it cannot be done?

The situation is that the client has high speed internet access and they use it 90 percent of the time.

There are other systems that the client needs to access that can only be accessed via dial up/out, they cannot be accessed via the internet.  I guess the good thing is, if there is a good thing, is that these other systems are all accessible via the same telephone number.

The big question is can you have high speed internet access and dial up that is accessible at the same time?  If so....how?

Thanks for your help (as always)

Craig

Craig,
this is a routing question.  First question is what is the dialup doing - connecting to a banking service or some other propriety thing or is it IP based networking to a private net?

If the former I'd recommend setting up the dialup on the client pc that requires the connnection.  A common example is the accountant of a business dialing into a bank to transfer payroll information.

If the latter and you need IP access to a different intranet then you need to configure the second interface (the modem) to handle requests for the destination IP range - then such a request will perform the dialup and connection.

This complexity isn't handled by e-smith out of the box but it's definitely something you can do manually.

We want to be able to do someting similar.

When connecting to a particular range of IP address the modem should dial the interanl RAS server. Otherwise it should dial out ISP

I've done some web searching an it should be possible BUT instruction on HOW to do it in the e-smit environment don't seem to be available.

Graeme,

In response to your question(s), it's the latter. I want to be able to dial out to a private TCP/IP based network that has a username/password login. It would be typical of how you dial out to your ISP except this is a "special" ISP. :-)

If it was only one a or two people then I would go the modem on the individual PC's and analog phone lines but we are talking 12 or more people occassional users so I figured a single dial out would be more efficent.

Would you be able to point me in the right direction on where to find the information I need.

Thanks so much,

Craig

P.S. And of couse anything I come up with will be shared with the group. :-)
