SMTP error 451?

All of a sudden yesterday, and with no changes on my part, my email server stopped picking up emails. Running Fetchmail in verbose mode gets the following:

fetchmail: SMTP< 451 mail server temporarily rejected message (#4.3.0)
fetchmail: SMTP error: 451 mail server temporarily rejected message (#4.3.0)

 not flushed          

and so on for all 100+ messages.

Does anyone know why my mail server is temporarily rejecting messages? Of course my ISP said "Are you running MDaemon?" and then went blank...

Heh. I always do this. Go and ask for help, then find out the answer myself. Maybe I should have gone looking for help earlier, I might have fixed it faster...

Anywho, the problem lay with RAV antivirus which I installed 2 weeks ago. It stopped working (it couldn't update itself) and so my email server stopped picking up emails. I uninstalled Rav, and bam, bucket loads of messages (plus one for every 5 minutes e-smith failed to connect)

Case closed, and time to look for McAfee and amavis, I think...

Were you running the eval copy or a registered copy? I am running the registered copy, without a complaint for a week now. I also see an occasional failure to update in the logs, but it will just keep scanning with the "old" files. Can you

Hope it doesn't take too much time to answer, but I am of course curious...

Hi Allen.

Yes it was the evaluation copy, but it was only about 10 days old. What happened was it stoped updating properly, worked fine for about a week with the old files, and then stopped altogether.

I tried reinstalling it some days after uninstallation, and the same thing happened again. So now I have to play with Amavis to try and get that to work :-(
