LDAP Question - How to add custom entries?
« on: August 08, 2001, 08:17:58 PM »
Hi!

Is it possible to add entries to the LDAP directory using email clients like Outlook, Outlook Express,... that can handle LDAP Servers?
By default only the info for accounts added on e-smith are included in the LDAP database.
So how to achieve write access for e-smith users?
Thanks in advance!

Simply add the users by adding new accounts.  Don't change the password from the default (so that the accounts are disabled).

Then forward their email to their real e-mail accounts.

Kind of a crappy way to do things... but until something better comes along...

not really a valid solution for my problem, because not only the admin should be able to add entries in the ldap adress book but also regular users...
Anyway thank you for your answer...
Other ideas?!

hmm - I don't want to sound unsatisfied, but the my primary goal would be to
log in the ldap server using the login/password combinations of registered e-smith users and have write privileges.
I've skimmed the docs at http://www.openldap.org but did not really find an answer for my problem - adding the webinterface for adressbook additions makes sense.
However it's too uncomfortable to always switch to the browser for simply adding a contact - I do not think my family members would be happy with this solution or at least the would not use it often...
There must be a way to solve that - tweaking the sldap.conf or ldap.conf should make the trick but I do not know what to change.

Hi David,

I am looking at doing this at the moment, did you manage to find a way of adding entries to the LDAP server without having to use a Web-based interface? I would love to be able to add entries using tools like Netscape etc.

Any help would be much appreciated.

thanks

Nick

Sorry, but I haven't found a solution or better I gave up searching for one.
Well, I'll take your post as a reminder to rethink about it. Maybe we can find a apropriate way to solve our ldap problem.
