Hi group

From reading the manual & the e-smith-manager screens it appears I should be able to communicate with an ibay from the internet. I have tried every combination (except the correct one obviously;-) but I can't get it to work.

I can access the i-bays locally with a password when I am on the intranet and can see folders OK, but not from the Internet.

To test access from the Internet, I use an iMac to dial out  and an e-smith box to dial out on a different line.

I used a user 'account' with Interarchy to ftp://account:@mydomain//users/account or Netscape to ftp://account:@mydomain/users/account and can upload or download OK.  (Does anyone know why Interarchy shows two '//'s between mydomain and users where Netscape shows one for the same input parameters?

I used an i-bay account with Interarchy to ftp://ibay:@domain/ and the exact same thing with Netscape.  But I get a window with nothing in it in both cases and I can't drag and drop to them or see the enclosed folders.  It appears I do not have the right permission.

Could some Mac savvy folk help me with the right syntax?

Also, I am unclear as to whether I should be able to connect from the Internet using the IP address from Appleshare.

Another point of confusion for me is why can I set a password for an i-bay?  I am fairly comfortable with permissions for Linux but the i-bay permissions are new to me.  Is it the group or the user permission that comes into play here?

E-smith is great on the intranet, but a little confusing from a Mac snob's perspective. Are there any great Mac success stories with e-smith? Maybe I misinterpreted the manual and am expecting more than is possible.

Thanks e-smith, for a great cross-platform product.

Sorry, I omitted the fact that I am using the latest production release (4.0.1) and I copied the content of ip-change to ip-up.

I was able to FTP from Windows from the Internet to e-smith by using ftp://admin:@mydomain/ibays/files and was able to upload a file.  Can't do it on a Mac tho.  Says no PORT command issued first.

Hi Paul,

>Are there any great Mac success stories with e-smith?

Absolutely. For example, the e-smith server and gateway is very popular with graphics shops and print service bureaus. Here's a case study:

http://www.e-smith.com/imagesetting.

You mentioned you've read the manual. I assume you saw this on the i-bay screen of the e-smith manager:

(*) User access modes marked with an asterisk are not supported by the Macintosh file sharing component. If you select one of those modes, this i-bay will not be available via Macintosh file sharing.

Specifically, Macintosh file sharing does not support user access to i-bays via file sharing or user ftp when set to Write=Group, Read=everyone or Write=Admin, Read=Group. (Select Write: Group, Read: Group.)

Does this help?

Sorry, No. I already tried  (Select Write: Group, Read: Group) with no luck.  With Fetch and Interarchy I get "Server Response: No PORT command issued first" when I try to upload a file.

Could you provide a sample ibay setting and corresponding URL for Interarchy or Fetch that would allow me to upload a file to the e-smith ibay from an an iMac via the Internet?  I could not find a sample upload process in the manual from the Internet.

I am using dyndns.org for my domain.  It seems to work fine for reading files.

Thanks
Paul
