I note that their have been no kernel updates for e-smith 4.1.x, despite three or four being released for the equivalent Red Hat distribution (7.0). Is this deliberate? There's quite a lot fixed in the latest Red Hat kernels - the DMA corruption problem, for example.

Is it possible to install the latest Red Hat kernel, or will this break something?
