Mac problems with file types
« on: January 03, 2001, 10:27:08 PM »
I've set up an E-Smith server for in house network only use with PC's, NT and Mac machines. I've been in the process of coping some of my backuped up Mac files stored on my NT4 server. It seems all has gone very well. And, then a rather serious change has taken place. After, doing some work in defining groups on my e-smith server something changed radically on my stored group of files that we're copied over from my NT machine. With the exceptions of file types like "JPGs" and a few others all of the Mac file types have coverted to text files. This means files created in Word, Pagemaker, Freehand, Illustrator, etc., etc. have all changed to raw text.

Upon coping the files back to my Mac, the file type is still txt, and therefore will not launch the appropriate program, but, they can be opened from within the appropriate program. The do not, however convert upon exit.

To clairify this a bit more: If I copy the files from the mac to e-smith, the file types are okay. If I copy the files from my NT to e-smith, while making the change from a Mac, the files are okay. If I copy the Mac files from the NT server to e-smith, the files started out okay, but now are not.

All of this happened after I changed group access privledges.

Any ideas, solutions?

Thanks,
Tim

Hi Tim,

>All of this happened after I changed group access privledges.

How were your group access privileges configured previously, and what were they set to when the problem occurred?

Group access privledges were configured for "everyone" both before and after. I did see the notes regarding changing this configuration and the effect it can have on Mac users.
