Is it possible to connect Windows NT workstations on a network to an e-smith server?
What I'm trying to achive is to have Windows NT workstations on an e-smith "domain", with users being able to log onto this domain and access network resources.

I know that on a Windows NT domain, when you configure the network properties, it is neccessary to add a computer account to a domain using the NT domain administrator account.
However, this doesn't work with e-smith as there appears to be no equivalent of the Windows NT SAM database.

Any ideas?

That is what the file server portion of  E-smith does. I would suggest you read the manual that is online at this site.

Yes, this is possible - and one of the great things about an e-smith/SME server.  You can create a Windows NT PDC (primary domain controller) without the high costs of software and hardware to run an NT/Win2k server.  This is handled with Samba (http://samba.org/) which is included with e-smith/SME.

*** PLEASE NOTE ***  If you are going to be connecting Windows 2000 clients to your e-smith/SME server you will need upgrade to Samba 2.2.1a on your e-smith/SME server.  Please check Dan Brown's fantastic documentation on how to do this:

(Also note that people have been having problems getting Win2k client machines to authenticate/connect to e-smith/SME even after upgrading to Samba 2.2.1a.  I have had no problems getting my Win2k machines connected.)

I have had no problems with W2KP workstation connecting. However, don't, don't don't use e-smith as a file server to Quickbooks in a multi-user mode. You will corrupt your data files, it is not if but when.

What are you basing your comments on regarding the use of quickbooks data on a shared e-smith/SME drive?

I thought MYOB and QuickBooks had the same situation, and I've not had a single user complain about corrupted files.

(Well not ESSG fault anyway!)
