Errors in user management...
« on: September 27, 2001, 08:47:11 PM »
Since I upgraded to SMEv5, any time I make any modifications to a user from the web manager, I get the following message....

Software error:Error occurred while modifying user.

For help, please send mail to the webmaster (admin@xxx.dyndns.org), giving this error message and the time and date of the error.

The extract from my messages log is as follows...

Sep 28 01:47:31 gw e-smith[3283]: gmake[1]: *** No rule to make target /etc/aliases', needed by mail.aliases'.  Stop.
Sep 28 01:47:31 gw e-smith[3283]: gmake[1]: Leaving directory /var/yp/hillis.dyndns.org'
Sep 28 01:47:31 gw e-smith[3283]: make: *** [target] Error 2
Sep 28 01:47:31 gw e-smith[3283]: S99ypserv-make=action|Event|user-modify|Action|S99ypserv-make|Start|1001605650 270781|End|1001605651 477037|Elapsed|1.206256

Can I assume that this is an incompatibility with the e-smith-nis package, and if so, how would I go about fixing this?

This was a fresh install of SMEv5, with NIS support added as per the e-smith team's HOWTO...

To (belatedly) answer my own question, in case it's of use to anyone else, it turns out that the absence of an /etc/aliases file was upsetting SME.  Simply creating a blank one caused the problem to go away...
