Hi all,

I came across the followinf problem in both ESSG 4.1.2 as well as SME 5.

On a W2K Pro machine used exclusively for admin purposes, when logged in as the Administrator (username Administrator, password the same as the root password on the ESSG / SME 5), I can browse the network and gain access to any shares (ahem, iBays) created with Everyone access. However, I cannot gain access to any iBays with specific Group access (even when the admin account is part of the group). This also affects any printers shared from the ESSG / SME server. A quick look at the messages log confirms my suspicion that I am unable to connect because there is no user called administrator in the ESSG.

As 'administrator' is longer than 12 characters, you won't be able to create a user called 'administrator'. It might even conflict with the admin account's pseudonym as well. Anyone know of a way around this ?

What I did was reasonably simple, though it may not be your solution

in W2K, go to Control - Panel, Users and Passwords and rename the Administrator account to admin.

As a further security measure, recreate an account called administrator and make it a guest with no access to anything

Oh yes, I know I can rename the local Administrator account to admin and gain access that way. However, this is not an option for a mixed network environment with multiple NT and W2K servers in addition to the ESSG.

Tried dropping to the shell prompt on the e-smith box and manually adding a user?

Unfortunately, being a Linux newbie, don't have a clue where to begin or the commands to use.

Any ideas ?
