No, Samba (which is used in SME 5) is not capable of acting as a BDC. As shipped, it also won't work as a PDC for Win2k clients, but if you upgrade Samba to the latest version, it will.

This issue of BDC with Samba is almost a taboo word in the Samba community. When people bring it up on the Samba mailing lists their either don't get an answer or they get an answer like "it's not fully implemented yet." As of the release of Samba 2.2.2, samba cannot act as a BDC or communicate with one if it is acting as a PDC. It can however act as a client in a network with a Win NT (not Win2k native mode) PDC/BDC combination.
Samba is a VERY fluid product as the developers are literally reverses engineering the microsoft networking model. I think BDC functionality is something that is close, but how close is anyones guess.

Samba HAS been successfully used as a BDC, however. The details are at

- good luck!

That document states quite unambiguously "Samba cannot fulfill the roles of a BDC".

David,
The only code branch of Samba that has EVER successfully been used as a BDC is the TNG code branch and that branch will never make it out of alpha.
Not even the Head code branch will work as a BDC.
