how do you copy files in the primary folder I keep getting access denied from my Windows 2000 machine

Via FTP, with admin login and password.

You could always:

chmod 777 /home/e-smith/files/primary

This will allow you to write to that directory ( but not the subs).

Its better to create a user, then logon to windows as that user.
You will find a samba folder that automounts everytime the user logs on.

Ignore the primary folder.
