boot errors after power failure
« on: November 14, 2001, 08:38:14 PM »
I installed 4.1.2 forgot about it.  It just worked.  However there was a power failure over the weekend and the box will not boot normally.  when it comes to up to lilo it does not show the picture and just says lilo.  When I choose linux it says error encountered, EOF and shows the lilo prompt again.  This box has 2 40 gig harddrives in when I installed but only used one. as well as a cd burner.  one HD is primary master, the other is secondary slave.  The cd is secondary primary.  When I removed the cdrom it booted fine.  Plugging it back in caused the problem again.  I did not have the problem before the power failure.  I have a backup of data.  Any ideas as to what the problem is, or should I just reinstall and do all the samba upgrades again.

If I read you correctly,  if you unplug the CD off your second IDE bus then
E-Smith boots normally and everything is fine, (cept you dont have a CD now),
but if you have the CD-Rom pluged into the secondary bus then E-Smith wont boot....

How about the CD rom being bad after power failure and causing IDE errors?
Or even motherboard problem?    A simple test if to boot with a floppy that
has CD-Rom support (like a Win ME boot disk) and see if the CD-Rom is
useable.

yes you read correctly.  I took the CD-burner out and put it into a workstation and I made a CD fine.  So its not bad

It is possible that the CMOS info on your motherboard might have gottent corrupted. Try setting up the CMOS again byloading defaults then customise according to your needs.

Then again, the motherboard controller itself might have gotten crook due to the power failure.

Just a thought.
