Topic: Virtual domain

I am trying to setup virtual domain on my E-smith 4.0.1 server/gateway machine. I have created host name on DNS. Then I created i-bay ans selected that i-bay as source for the the virtual domain. But still when I tyep the virtual domain name it points back to my main domain.

I will appreciate your help.

What do you mean by "created host name on DNS"?

Note that you should not need to modify any DNS settings - the Virtual Domain panel does this for you when you create a virtual domain.

    This is not correct--the outside world needs to know that virtual.mydomain.com is the same as mydomain.com.  If you've set up an alias such that *.mydomain.com points to mydomain.com, you're fine.  If you haven't (or can't), you need to add an alias for virtual.mydomain.com.

Further to my previous post about virtual domain, I would like to add more to it.
In e-smith, I am using domain name as mydomain.com. I added host on DNS server for my domain so which became host.mydomain.com.
So I added virtual domain on E-smith machine host.mydomain.com. But when I use this address on my web browser, it points to www.mydomain.com. But I do similar thing on IIS it works fine and goes to proper place.

I did one more test, in E-smith I changed my domain name to www.mydomain.com
instead of mydomain.com. With this setting it works fine but then my email server does not work because then it becomes www.email.mydomain.com.

I will appreciate your further help.

Yes, I should have been a little more clear.  I'm thinking of what needs to be done on the local side of things... the virtual domain name of course would still need to be registered and pointing to the same IP as the primary domain.  (And after re-reading Prab's post I think this is what he was trying to say, though it is unclear.)

Did you associate the virtual domain content with an ibay?

Are you on the local network when you do this?

Do you mean to say "www.e-smith.mydomain.com"?  The mail
should still work, you would just have to specify the
new mail server name in your email client. Change
the domain name back to the way you had it, try
browsing to your virtual domain using the URL
www.host.mydomain.com, and let us know what you see.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your help. Yes, tried it again by changing my domanin name in e-smith configuration to www.mydomain.com. After doing this my email address became
username@www.mydomian.com.
Then my previous email address username@mydomian.com stopped working.

But with this my virtual domain started working.

But then this does not seem right to me because email address is always
username@mydomian.com

Change your domain name back to mydomain.com.

Your email will work as before...

You should be able to access/view your virtual domain at the URL www.host.mydomain.com.   We'll look into why you can't access the virtual domain content by browsing to host.mydomain.com.
