If "If" really isn't an option, then *don't* try to upgrade your kernel to 2.4 - SME is designed and written around the 2.2 kernel, and the 2.4 kernel "breaks" lots of things. The same goes for Axon - it's bleeding edge and prone to bugs, errors and random unpredictableness. If you *need* stable, then stay with SME, and *don't* stuff with it.
OTOH, if you don't mind the occasional server outage, and need the features that Axon is concentrating on, then by all means, go for it - contribute to their project, and help them get stable.
I, personally will be sticking with SME. A 2.4 kernel would be nice, as would the journaling systems that it's starting to come with, but it's not *really* necessary, and I'm not enough of a Linux expert to fix major problems... sometimes even the minor ones stump me quite a bit...
