Topic: ESSG 4.12 u/g kernel to 2.4.9-13

Greetings all!

I've took a look at RedHat's mini HOWTO guide for upgrading the kernel but I'm afraid that I'm just daft when it comes to stuff like this.

I need to upgrade the kernel to 2.4.x because the local Ma Bell DSL service is not compatible with the 2.2.x kernel (so I've found out). Apparently, PPPOE and the 2.4.x kernel are more MTS (the local Telecom service) friendly.

Can someone -please- help step me through the upgrade of the kernel to 2.4.9-13 (current kernel at RedHat's website).

It is allegedly still alive.  Hop on over to http://www.c4solutions.net/axontest/ and post a comment, if you want to help fan the flames.  They had a recent setback, but are supposedly in the process of restarting.  Demonstrating your support might help.

Axon also supports Dual processor Athlons, where as e-smith does not at the moment.

It is based on ESSG 4.12, but flies on the 2.4 kernel, and xfs journaling files system.

I've tested it, and it has been stable in all my usage scenarios.  A build based upon SME 5.1 beta is supposedly in the works, with no release date speculated.

Can you just "Upgrade" to this version, or does it require an installation from start.
I've got a LOT of stuff on my server I don't want to have to worry about.

I would say "no" to a simple upgrade --- because of the reformatting of the file system.  It may be possible, but beyond my expertise.  If you have a second machine, I'd suggest installing Axonlinux on the second, then doing a "Restore," using the save file from a full backup on the current machine.  If that works, you are in business.

"If" really isn't an option here. So this leads back to the original question...
Can someone help me out with a "how to" on upgrading the ESSG 4.12 kernel 2.2 to 2.4?

"If" you use a second machine, as I stated, and "if" that doesn't work, you have lost nothing.  Total effort to try would be about an hour.  "If" you wait for a response to your request, you'll wait longer than that, for sure.

If "If" really isn't an option, then *don't* try to upgrade your kernel to 2.4 - SME is designed and written around the 2.2 kernel, and the 2.4 kernel "breaks" lots of things.  The same goes for Axon - it's bleeding edge and prone to bugs, errors and random unpredictableness.  If you *need* stable, then stay with SME, and *don't* stuff with it.

OTOH, if you don't mind the occasional server outage, and need the features that Axon is concentrating on, then by all means, go for it - contribute to their project, and help them get stable.

I, personally will be sticking with SME.  A 2.4 kernel would be nice, as would the journaling systems that it's starting to come with, but it's not *really* necessary, and I'm not enough of a Linux expert to fix major problems... sometimes even the minor ones stump me quite a bit...

You may want to investigate the e-smith, alpha 5.1 release. I believe it is built on the 2.4 kernel.

First, 5.1 is now in beta.  Second, it still uses the 2.2 kernel.
