Backup User Accounts

Hi all,

Does anyone know what is the easiest / fastest way to backup all user accounts on ESSG 4.1.2 (Only the accounts and passwords, don't care about any ibays, files, etc) for the purpose of reinstating them after a clean format / reinstall of the server ?

Additionally, can the backed up accounts be reinstated into SME 5 instead of ESSG 4.1.2 again ?

Regards,

Kelvin

Are you just talking about backing up the passwd file, or did you need something more?

Let's have a look at 2 examples.

1. Something is funny / wrong with the server. I want to be able to backup all the usernames / passwords and possibly aliases / pseudonyms (though not absolutely necessary - just usernames and passwords will do most times). Don't care about any ibays or files. Format and reinstall the server then put back all the usernames / passwords without needing to manually key them all back in one by one at the server manager console.

2. Say we want to set up more than one server at more than one location but want to have the same set of usernames / passwords at both. After creating all the users and passwords on one server, we want to be able to copy out (export) the user database, then reimport them at the 2nd server and voila ! We now have the same users and passwords on both servers.

Could it be as simple as just copying the smb and unix password files or does SME / ESSG store usernames in a database elsewhere as well ? Netware 3.1x has a simple mechanism to do this. NT up to version 4 does not (without a 3rd party app.). Any ideas for ESSG / SME ?
