Migrate from SuSE PDC

Hi all,

is it possible to replace a SuSE 7.2 Samba 2.2.2 PDC with e-smith? We want to buy e-smith cause of SuSE really sucks in some ways...
I have found the samba-upgrade howto here and it seems that upgrading is a bit like copying Samba from one machine to another?
If i copy the following files from SuSE to the new e-smith server:

[root@e-smith samba]# ln -s ../smbpasswd smbpasswd
[root@e-smith samba]# ln -s ../smb.conf smb.conf
[root@e-smith samba]# ln -s ../MACHINE.SID MACHINE.SID
[root@e-smith samba]# ln -s ../smbusers smbusers
[root@e-smith samba]# ln -s ../lmhosts lmhosts

can the Clients (WinNT/2000) logon again or is there another way?

greetings

Just wait a little longer they are close (I think) to releasing SME 5.1 (it is in beta now and looks very good) it will have Samba 2.2.2 ready to go as a PDC and print server and also some other very nice features.  The other part I am not very sure about. I would say the safest bet would be to recreate the users manually, but if there were a lot of them it would at best be a pain, of course.  I think NT/2000 would catch the new server right away during your first attempt to authenticate a user.  Also SME uses template fragments for the configuration, which would not be compatible with the old SuSE config files.

There is also a how-to's on batch creation and deletion of user that may be helpful

In short I don't think there is an "easy" way around it, but if I am wrong someone will correct me shortly

Thanks,

Kevin

Hi,
you are right to switch from Suse to e-smith. I did cut down my admin-work-time from 3+ hours weekly to 1- hours monthly by that ....:-)

There is no way to get your users from suse to e-smith, because e-smith hostnames and users are handled in another way. The users must be created by the means of e-smith manager. Otherwise they (e.g.) will not be able to receive mail. Same for hostnames. It is very easy (compared to suse...).

Your way did not work with my server.

You should wait for Versions 5.1 as recommended or even use the 5.1beta3 version, which worked excellent for me.
