3 port print server

3 port print server
« on: January 08, 2002, 04:54:23 PM »
Okay, I feel stupid now but I need an answer.

Client has a three port off brand print server. IP address is set correctly at 192.168.10.5 pings out good and all that. Installed windows software show the two printers that are attached.

Question:
How do I set this up in e-smith? Have seemed to try everything, can always get the first one (port one) going, but I don't know how to list them so it will  look at the different ports. They want to ass another to port three as soon as we get the other two working.

S.O.S.

Thanks folks

More information (if you have it) about the brand of print server may help. They tend to vary in their level of functionality when it comes to Linux. Some rely on Windows drivers for their functionality.

An alternative solution may be to add a dual parallel port PCI card to the e-smith server, as it has the option to configure up to three local printers for network users to use. Here is a link to one that is about $55.00 US

http://www.pcconnection.com/scripts/productdetail.asp?product_id=239294

There website has a document (ironically in Word format) for setting it up under Linux.

BTW, I haven't done this, it is just an idea. YMMV.

Sorry, not an option.

On a network scan the printer comes up like this [3p_PrintServ43B120] {HP/JET direct}. It is as offshore product for sure though.
No other info other than the model is pn3000.

It will work through the e-smith machine, I just need to try and find a way to call the different lp ports, rather than JUST ip. Or even a way anybody knows how to find out what ports (9100?) it has opened for printing. My network scanner is not showing this. If I find the ports couldn't i do somthing like 192.168.10.5:9001, 192.168.10.5:9002, 192.168.10.5:9003, or will that not work?

Thanks so much
Garret

Or how about this, windows  2000 allows me to set up a printer with a URL like 192.168.10.5/lp1, lp2, lp3 . . . can I do this with e-smith?

Hard to say for sure but it looks like it. This one is for mixed envronments also, PN3000, 3 ports and comes with 2 disks, I'd have to say yes.

Any ideas on how to do it?

>>windows 2000 allows me to set up a printer with a URL like 192.168.10.5/lp1, lp2, lp3 <<

Garret,

based on that I would try to create the 3 printer entries in the E-smith-manager with 192.168.10.5 as their "Remote Address" and
lp1, lp2, lp3 as their individual "Remote Name"/"Network Printer Name" (overtype raw as the default).

You might have problems with this setup. Most of these low cost print servers have the same problem with remote print spools - they cannot discriminate between port 1 and port 2 or port 3 if there is a printer on port 1. Jobs sent to port 2 or port 3 come out of the printer on port 1. If you leave port 1 free then the server can discriminate successfully between ports 2 and 3.

I have a number of these servers dotted around my clients [3 differnt brands involved] and they all exhibit the same problem. Fortunately I have never needed to attach more than 2 printers to any of them so I just use ports 2 and 3 and things work fine.

If anyone reading this knows why this happens, I'd appreciate some details.

Hi Garret,

I have a similar problem with a D-Link 3 port print server. What was your solution?

I've tried using the print name but without success.

Michael.
