I want to say thank you for the developers of the e-smith server/gateway. I have been using e-smith since version 4 came out and although like with all software based products there are problems none of them have been large enough to make me even think twice about using your product.
Today I took the big leap of faith and moved from 4.1.1 to 5 on my 2 e-smith servers. I was afraid I was going to have all kinds of problems. BUT NO! It went nice and smooth. By the time I finished the upgrade I was 95% back on track. But I did have a little fine tuning to do that I would like to share here.
If you are using version 4 and you upgrade samba then move from 4 to SME you will have to go back and upgrade the samba again to get it working right. (I did it by using the samba how-to on the e-smith.org site) It is now up and working fine, all file shares and printers are back up.
Also if you are using mysql in version 4 and have a program that is using the ROOT account (Which you shouldn’t but I must admit I was) you will find that in e-smith version 4 the mysql ROOT password in the ldap.pw file was only 5 characters long. When you upgrade to SME it changes the password to 75 characters. That will cause any programs using the root account to be locked out of the databases! You have to go to the ldap.pw file then copy and paste the new password into the config files of any programs you have. That should work fine!
Besides that my experiences doing the upgrades were great! And again I thank ALL the developers of e-smith/SME for their hard work! Please keep it up.
Also please let me know what the new features will be in the next version of SME? I hope that you PLEASE go to IMP 3.0. Thank you.
