Redundant Links via Dialup Modem/ISDN
« on: January 19, 2002, 01:12:26 PM »
Has anybody out there played with setting up redundant links on E-Smith SME5.0/5.1.

I would like to have connection to my ISP that is either modem or ISDN, both devices are external and just work from the standard modem dialup scripts that get setup by a default install. Eg: I could have 2 x 56K modems or 1 external ISDN modem (Travers Technologies external ISDN modem) that is connected to each serial port and dials just like a normal modem.

I would like to be connected on ttyS1 and if that link fails dial up another link that could be to the same ISP or another ISP via ttyS0.

Any thoughts or direction would be greatly appreciated.

Craig

I'm still waiting for such a module too.
It would be a great enhancement for SME.

I am working on that, but from a larger pipe to a 56K in case of failure.

If I sort it out, I will post it.

If you have luck, please mail me.

Bobby,

That sounds good to me. If my SAT or ISDN fails I would like to get a modem to dial out and keep the link up.

Lets keep in touch and see what we can work out.

If you want any testing done for what you have let me know.

I would be happy to help test your module, Bobby.

If you would like to make part/all of your code available, I have a few test servers here that I could use to help test it for you.

Guys,

Were you ever able to get the redundant links set up and configured to work on SME?  I have been searching around the forums and there seems to be some talk but no definitive solution.

I'd like my SME server to be able to use primary T1 WAN link but failover to backup ISDN or dial-up modem(s) in case of primary failure.

Even better would be a system of load balancing where on link would fail to the other and vice versa.

Ideas/thoughts....anyone?  Thanks.

Me too

Any news?

I'm not even looking for  automatic change over from broadband to ISDN. Just a simple script to disable the broadband NIC and enable the ISDN card for dialup would do, even better integrated into Server Manager.

It's a simple page two radio buttons labled "Broadband" and "ISDN" the heading above them reading "Internet connection via:" The hard bit is what needs to go on in the background, hopefully it wouldn't require a reboot.

Cheers
Dave.
