No I didn't. Why is squid running by default anyway? And what is the most easy way to stop it?

Here is the deal. I upgraded from e-smith 5 patch 3. When I had 5 patch 3 everything was fine. Now I am using 5.1.2 and I can't get to this particular website or the site www.migente.com. (I can get to them but when I try to log in and access them my browser just hangs. Or I get that error I wrote above!)

It seems like they changed the squid configuration in this version. I am hoping some one can help me get this worked out without too much fiddling with my server!

I think I found something
In masq
/sbin/ipchains --append input -p tcp --source 10.1.0.0/255.255.0.0 --destination 0.0.0.0/0 80 -j REDIRECT 3128
heee that must be squid

Disable it.

That is the transparent proxy rule for squid.  If e-smith is the gateway and a user tried to get out to the web it will automatically run the traffic thru squid.

No real help with your problem, but if you diable squid and e-smith is your gateway then you will need to kill this rule to get out to the web.

To do that, do:

/sbin/e-smith/db configuration setprop squid Transparent no
/sbin/e-smith/signal-event remoteaccess-update

We will prepare an update which makes this change automatically if squid is disabled.

In the meantime, it would be interesting to know why those websites in particular are not happy to play ball with squid.

Charlie, does this completely disable the transparent proxy?  Looks like it should, but just wanting to be sure...  Thanks!

And is it easy to turn everything back on. I like using squid because of the logs etc I get. And if I turn it off I want to be about to turn it back on after I am finished going to these 2 sites.

Maybe a blade that will give you an option to turn it on and off?

Hummmm, seems that Squid is not the problem, something else is wrong. I turned Squid off and I reset everything so I could get to the net (Which I can do with no problem.) But I still can not get to:

http://www.blackplanet.com
http://www.migente.com
or
http://www.asainavenue.com

I am using a cable modem, if I plug it into my PC everything is fine, but when I use the server as my gateway the sites time out. Most of the time I can get to the home page but can not log in. Most of the time I can not even get to the start page?

Pretty strange.

I seemed as though Squid was just letting me know that the pages were not coming down. It seems like pages that use a lot of Java don't come down right? (I also had some problems with my companies web site I go to to put in my time sheet. When I clicked on some of the buttons I would get errors like the one I wrote in the start of this post.) Some things would not come down from the site. :-(

Something is wrong with squid AND dns in the new version. I upgraded from 5.0.3beta and after upgrade i

1. could not reach my local domain (www.local.de) via squid, but was directed to my outside version of www.local.de.
2. could not reach a new (virtual domain on e-smith server) local.domain.de or www.local.domain.de created via admin-panel on another i-bay, but was directed via squid to outside world.
3. had to delete all that stuff and
4. now reach http://local.de on primary i-bay and http://www.local.de outside at ISP through squid again.

A little confusing. One of my reasons for being happy with e.smith was the easy domain-configuration :-((.

Perhaps it would help in your case, if you rebuild the complete squid-cache from the command-line!?

If you think there is, you should send a detailed report to bugs@e-smith.com.

This is crazy, I am finding more and more sites I can not get to since I upgraded from 5 patch 3 to 5.1.2. I tried turning off squid etc and when I do that I just get blank pages. So it's not Squid.

Has anyone had this problem and has anyone figured this out?

I have been experiencing the same with my SME setup.  I too went from 5.0.3 to 5.1.2 and have experience a GREAT deal of intermitant problems with accessing sites.  I haven't been able to access google at times and almost any other site at various times.  If I reboot the server things improve slightly for a while but everything is VERY sluggish or I just can't access the sites at all.

I checked SQUID and rebuilt the Cache.  No luck  according to top my CPU usage is about .7%.  I have 64MB of Memory on a Cyrix 225 MHz CPU box. Memory shows about 4000K free with 0K used in swap (265K free swap)

dslreports.com  shows my throughput is 724K down 124K Up. so I don't think it's a bandwidth problem.

Has anyone found any rhyme or reason to these symptoms?  I haven't been able to pin it down.

Blake, I get somewhat simular problems, but only from my WinXP box.  If I cannot access a site from my XP machine I can go to my Win98SE box and access it with no problem.

It also includes checking mail from my XP box too.

Sometimes if I reboot the XP box I can browse and check e-mail, but it is not consistent.

I was thinking I had a problem with the XP box, but reading through this thread causes me to belive it is a problem in SME 5.1.2 since my problems began immediately after upgrading my server from 5.0 patch 3.

I haven't had time to do a detailed check of my system, but I should get around to it this week I hope.
