PPTP problem in 5.1.2?
« on: February 10, 2002, 02:04:10 AM »
I replaced my 5.0 with 5.1.2 with a clean install.  In the past, I used pptp vpn from 2 computers on my home lan and connected to the same sme5.0 server at work, passing through my old sme5.0 server at home.  Never any problems.  I used PPTP instead of setting up IPSEC. (for only 2 machines)

With 5.1.2, only a single pptp connection will work going out from my home lan to my sme5.0 at work.  Why the change?  This is not really a problem, just an unexpected change in behavior.  Could this be a bug? or am I messed up in the head to connect 2 computers using pptp instead of ipsec?

Anyone out there done the RedHat network engineer cert?  I am an MCSE that sees Microsoft losing to Linux in the near future.  If Linux could only replace Exchange server.  Microsoft has everyone addicted to global address book, calendars, tasks, meetings, and public folders.  I read that samba 3.0 can be an active directory domain controller!!  If so, and it can replicate it's active directory, say goodbye to Windows 2000 server unless you have to use exchange.

I got my RHCE about a year ago. The test is very hard. It took six hours to complete. It is broken up into three sections. Troubleshooting, Multiple Choice test, and Server config.

The troubleshooting is 2 1/2 hours and takes you through four "scenarios". The basically give you a task to accomplish on a fresh machine. You can't perform the task though, so you have to fix it. A neat little way of telling you there is a problem without actually telling you the problem ;) If you can't get them all, don't bother. It took me almost 2 hours as I was able to breeze through the first three, the fourth was a bugger.

Multiple choice was easy. If you can't pass this you need a smack.

Last was a server conifg. They give you a blank machine and a spec sheet. The system has to be installed a certain way, and then has to be config'd to a certain spec. Set up Apache, set up a virtual domain, set up email accounts only, recompile kernel, etc. It varys from person to person. It took me all of the 2 and a half hours.

I passed, but it wasn't easy. You should at least take the accelerated class before the test, if not the slower, easier classes that they offer.

Bear in mind I got my RHCE for 7.0, and things may have changed.

Just my 2c.
