SME5.1.2 Private server & Gateway

Is it a feature of sme5.1.2 that when configured as a private server & gateway that it does not respond to ping requests from the internal network or allow ping requests to the internet.

I tested by pinging constantly while I changed my config from private to normal server & gateway and true as bob as soon as the network came up again after the reboot the sme started responding to the ping.

What might be the reasons for this (if it is a feature)

Also is it possible that this might prevent an outbound vpn connection ?

Hi,

i've setup the 5.1.2 server as a private server and gateway with my ADSL-Connection, without any changes.

PING works fine but only from inside. I'm not able to PING the server from the internet (I think this is fine !!!)

Hi,

Isn't it so that evry NIC will respond to a ping unless you configure ICMP echo off.

You can ping your SME server within your local lan like you can ping any IP based device.

I cannot ping from any pc on the local lan

if I ping 192.168.10.1 -s 1 -t from a windows box I get timed out messages
if I reconfigure sme to be a normal server gateway when it comes up after reboot I get replys ???

Hi,

Did you try to execute 'ifconfig' in the console when it's not a gateway?
It will tell you what adress your interface has.

I have a similar question...I was trying to disable ping requests from the internet by configuring the server as a private server and gateway and noticed this also shut down the web sites running in my i-bays.Is this correct and if so how can I disable the ping while still keeping my web sites available?

Best Regards

Yes

I think the default behaviour of a SME private server and gateway is to disable all external interfaces from recieving traffic.

I am still wondering why i cant ping the internal interface ??

Everything works fine ( i think) when it is configured as private except ii cant ping the internet or run a traceroute through sme.

I can surf and all that , I was just having trouble establishing a vpn connection in the private config I will test tonight and report back.

Is this an upgrade server? I had the same problem when I upgraded my 5.0 to 5.1.2. I ended up reinstalling the server. The fresh install worked as it was supposed to.
