IBM Server Raid manager
« on: February 14, 2002, 08:35:52 AM »
Hi all,

I just installed E-smith 5.1 on our IBM server that has ServerRaid Controller and I am having problems running the Server Raid Manager even though the software installation was successful. I think the problem is something related to X-windows but I don't exactly knows. Is there someone there that can help me installing just the X-windows component of Red hat and the necessary Java support, because the error message pertains to a missing libX11 something.

Thanks,

Emmanuel

Installing X on e-smith is not really a good idea. Some users have reported doing it, with various degrees of success.

A better alternative would be to see if you can setup your RAID arrays through a BIOS utility, and then monitor from a remote workstation. I don't know too much about the IBM RAID adaptors, so I don't know what options they offer.

On the Netfinity's we use, the ServerRaid package is controlled by a supplied cd (somewhere around version 6 or 8 now) used to prep the machine beofre any platform is installed (SME or any other). If your box is older you may well be looking for the ServeRaid CD (its different from the one mentioned above, current vers somewhere around 3.8 or 3.08) as the older Netfinity's, like the 5000's used a pci add-in controller rather than a built-in one. So, to keep it short, use the cd before SME and you should be fine...I believe the next stage is to install SME as a standard (non-raid) install. Sorry about the vagueness around the cd versions, I'm at home so I cant see the cd's from here ;)

Hope this helps...

I agree to what John has mentioned. Just yesterday I installed SME 5.1 on a Netfinity 5500 M10 with onboard Raidcontroller. Just manage your Raidcontroller with the CD from IBM (can be downloaded here : ftp://ftp.pc.ibm.com/pub/pccbbs/pc_servers_iso/48p9215.iso).
The programm you would like to install (serveraid-manager) in my opinion only consists of features that you do not really need. As a matter of fact Im using Linux and Netfinitys with Serveraid-Controllers since end of 1998, a time where there was no Serveraid-Manager available, without ever needing its features.

Hi all,

Thanks a lot for your suggestions. It is an X342 Ibm E-server and yes it came with ServerRaid Support CD. I have managed to configure it using the CD and seems to be ok. Thank you all again and you might here from me again later on.

HI all,

Thanks, just for info. I have configured the Raid Controller with the CD that came with the server and seems to be ok. Just want to have the Server Manager loaded for management purposes. Might be with the version of the support CD because I tried loading the same version of the software on a server running RedHat 7.1 and twhen you start the server manager, it just hang. Downloading latest version and might solve my problem.

Thanks,

Emmanuel
