remove www.mydomain.net from localhosts
« on: March 05, 2002, 11:13:12 AM »
I using a e-smith server on version 4.1.2 and I have setup the server to accept email for mail.foothill-roseville.org, and our ISP is serving the web page for www.foothill-roseville.org.  On the internal network the web developer is trying to get to www.foothill-roseville.org and he gets the internal web page, not the page from the isp.

Now when I setup this server I did set it up for the domain foothill-roseville.org, am I stuck here.  I somehow need to change dns so that when computers on the local network try to connect to www.foothill-roseville.org they bypass the local dns and use the external dns servers.  I have tried on the host names portion of the web manger pointing the www. address to the ip of the ISP's server but they are using virtual domains and this does not work.

any help would be higly appreciated.

Duncan

One quick and easy method might be to change your DNS server settings (in windows) to your isp DNS server settings or add the address in your LMHOSTS file.

The above would likely cause problems elsewhere and would be a bugger to set up on a larger LAN.

Another method might be to set up a Proxy.pac file on the E-Smith server.
There probably is an easier way.

Hi, I had the same problem.
Just add the following to the 2Hostnames and addresses" option:
www2     "IP address of your web site hosted by your ISP"   Modify... Remove...

Now, from your web browser, type www2.foothill-roseville.org

You should access your web site ... the one on the Internet !

in your server-manager go to the host panel and edit the www hostname set it to the ip address of the machine your web site is hosted on.

You can go to www.domainwhitepages.com and put in www.foothill-roseville.org to see what the ip address is.
