Is there a full list or Howto on the various configuration commands for e-smith ?

I have managed to change various things by reading around the forums, but it would have been nice to have a single document covering the comands. Is there one or is it worth generating one ?

Hi, Stephen. Will order your mods shortly....been a bit rushed.

Re documentation, I notice other people asking about it. Would it make sense to at least have a simplified howto on some of the most commonly used commands e.g enabling / disabling services etc (atalk is a particular one I have to dispense with PDQ).

A sort of 'beginners guide to advanced server config' ?

It would have saved me a load of trouble.

And why is there nothing official on the subject ? Linux is usually one of the most well documented OS's about - I can't believe there is not more on this !

Anyone else got any thoughts ? I don't know enough to do it myself, although possible with assistance I could cobble something together, even if it's just a development of notes to myself.

This would indeed be a great idea, such as the config files for editing default permissions on ibays, various other update howtos and certain proprietary filenames or files.

Are you able to zap the altalk one?, I pretty sure i tried and then adding users would fail as its used in the addition process (all parts of the system gets updated and services get recycled etc).

Would you be kind enough to clarify?

As I had no need for ATALK either, here's how I disabled it and prevented it from loading. I've had no issues with adding users.

- Login or "su" as root

- At the command prompt type:
/sbin/e-smith/config setprop atalk status disabled

- Reboot the server
reboot

Yup, that's the first thing I tried to find - a wander through the boards did the trick.

And that's really what set me thinking about it.

Anyone else got any fav tips & trick that I could use ? I'll try and sit down and knock a few ideas together. I can only speak for V5.0 as that's what I have.

I have now cut and paste about 6 pages of .txt from posts on here.

They cover various issues with set up that concern my particular
config but I think most people will want to do.

eg No one I have read as yet wants to use Atalk ?

Maybe it just works for those who use it and its not an issue ?

I think most people with win clients need drive mapping and login scripts
working pretty quickly but its still not impletmented in the control panel
unless you add a module.

Anyways, perhaps we could get together a newbie.faq ?

Yup. That would be neat. Since I've never written one, where do you want to start ?

Is it worth discussing here or is there a better medium ? Where to keep the original to start with ? Has anyone got the facility for a mailing list - unfortunatley the only machine I had that could do it is not online currently and don't know when it will be. Is it possible to run a 'dialup' listserver ? I could probably do that.

Does anyone else have any thoughts on this ? Any material that would be worth considering ?

First off would be some sort of list of topics to cover.

Off the top of my head :

Setups Commands
- enabling / disabling standard services
- configuration database what it is etc. Other commands such as console-save etc

Templates - basic stuff on how they work, where they are.

A bit more detail on some mail stuff - that's been a headache for me ! Multi-pop, etc.

Some common problems - e.g. random dialouts (got that at the minute....)

Pointers to other useful documentation

Are there any people out there who have experience of particular areas that they could write on - I know for iInstance Steve Noble has done a lot on mail etc.

Let me know. As I think I have already said, I run two of these things so I am but a novice - I have been playing with Linux for several years and finally felt confident enough to have a go for real. But I still consider myself a 'newbie'

It's been another steep leaning curve. I am sure there are plenty more like me out there who would do it if they had a bit more info at there fingertips rather than just reading therough the boards relentlessly ! Something like E-smith is a fairly easy intro and the sort of disto that should get people going in Linux.

Let me know what you think.

I suggest that you folks post this on the e-smith devinfo mailing list.  You can find the link along with the link to this mailing list.  You'll get the most feedback and help from the folks in this group.

As to posting your FAQs, Mitel maintains an open offer to host HOWTOs and what not.  I would think that your project applies to that offer.  Post an inquiry in devinfo and you?ll certainly get a response from Mitel.

Good luck.

Was just searching through the forums for some info and came accross this post.

Have you folks got any further with this?

If you need a hand getting info and getting it together in a HowTo format please let me know I would like to help.

We could then post it to the devinfo mail list for any corrections and additions.
