custom 'backup to disk' howto + rpm available

Summary: Custom Backups on a SMEserver

An alternative method for backing up your server to disk. Make two minor changes to be able to exclude or include server directories. eg exclude ibays with mp3's or ghost images.

Or with the rpm dungog-backup create backup sets to prepare and automate flexible backups.

I have been looking for an alternative solution to tape backups and it looks like dungog-backup may be it.  I do have a few questions...

Does the backup allow for a *complete* backup of the system?  From looking at the demo, you can backup non-standard directories by specifying them.  Is there a way to just say 'backup everything on the disk'?

In terms of restoring...does this utility also perform restores, or is that left up to the server-manager to do?  If it does do restores, will it restore everything, including non-standard directories and settings?  Also, is it possible to selectively restore only certain files?

Looks like really good work.  This is something I am strongly leaning towards supporting (by loosening up the tight-fisted grip on my money :)

i'm not sure if you would want to
you could pick off root directories
eg. usr opt home etc bin sbin var

either use, the servermanager, winzip or the command line

> will it restore everything, including non-standard directories and settings?

yes

>Also, is it possible to selectively restore only certain files?

sort of, with winzip or powerarchiver
or
yes with the command line and lots of disk space

>Looks like really good work.

thanks,
this looks like a killer app to me, it's so flexible
eg, you can set it to backup just one directory hourly while you work on a project
so it keeps a record of your progress

Hi Stephen,

Is this a cost item? The usual links to your contributions don't seem to have the above rpm available. In fact the only link I can find is here; http://www4.tpgi.com.au/users/dungog/sme/download.html

Can you advise?

Best Regards
