Drop outs with ISP Telstra

Drop outs with ISP Telstra
« on: April 03, 2002, 10:53:54 AM »
Since I switched ISP to Telstra Bigpond (in Australia) I experience that my modem drops the line, somtimes several times per hour.

With my previous ISP that never happend - same phone line, same modem. If I dial into Telstra Bigpond from a Windows box the connection seems stable. So it looks like the problem is that the e-smith does not 'like' Telstra Bigpond'.

I heard that other e-smith users had similar problems with Telstra Bigpond, but they did not know an answer.

Anyone able to help?

Thanks, Peter.

Rick

I gather by your email address that you are using Bigpond cable, in which case your problem relates to the heartbeat. You need to add a package to solve this problem, you can find a how to here

hope this helps

Make sure you go for the older V1.3 of bpalogin when you go to set it up as the newer version 2 doesn't seem to work too well.

Thanks Rick and Luke for your answers.

I am not on Telstra cabla but on a 56k modem. So the bpalogin would not be a solution for me.

Any other idea?

It is probably not your line, modem etc since your original setup was fine. What about the fact that telstra are notorious for having problems with thier internet services.

if you have access to another modem give that a try, I have a friend that uses e-smith with dialup and has found that some modems are far more reliable at maintaining a connection than others in a linux enviroment. Most modems are made with windows users in mind, so i guess that is not a surprise
