Right now I have a computer running as a mail server at work (Windows 2000 Server + ipswitch Imail).
I'm interested to swith me to linux.
After looking for different alternatives in mail servers in Linux,
I found SME and I was gratefully surprised with its capacities.
At the moment I have a registered domain name with an ISP which redirects the mail to the local IP we have in the company (DSL line).
My doubts are:
Must I follow any advice on the installation of the SME to make it act as a mail server?
Better IMP than Squirrel Mail?
What antivirus do you recommend?  Avp Linux?
Thanks.

SME acts as a mail server by default; you don't have to do anything special to enable this.

Well, IMP is what's included.  No reason you couldn't install Squirrel mail as well if you really prefer it, but IMP is very nice (nicer yet with version 3.0).

If you pay for the ServiceLink package, antivirus is included.  Otherwise, one fairly popular option is RAV.  It's available as a fully-functional 60-day free evaluation version.

The mailer built into SME is qmail which has its good and bad points.  One issue is that qmail always sends separate individual copies of group messages even to multiple recipients on the same remote host.  Sendmail or postfix would send a single copy with multiple addresses in this case which reduces the bandwidth for the transmission.   Another quirk is that mail groups are automatically created as you create user permission groups for the logins.  If you have groups that need to contain outside addresses you must create a local user with email forwarding to be able to add them to a group - or install some other mail list manager to handle it.

How do I uninstall the eval version of RAV?
I'm tired of getting my two emails every hour from rav telling me my evaluation has expired.  After two weeks BTW.  I don't get it
