turn off logging?

turn off logging?
« on: April 04, 2002, 09:31:37 PM »
It's been my experience that logging in Linux tends to fill up drives, which causes some versions of linux to stop working.

It's also work the server doesnt need to be doing - since I never look at the logs.

Any way to stop logging, or set limits? Where is this done?

Thanks...

Logs automatically get rotated and pruned, so you won't have to worry about them getting out of hand.  Even if you don't use the logs, they may come in handy if you start having problems.  Don't let your positive experience with e-smith convince you that problems don't happen --- they still do.  If anything ever acts flaky, you can always examine the logs and get to the bottom of it.  Don't underestimate their importance...

There is absolutely NOTHING in the manual about log rotation and automatic removal.

What's the deal?  Does anybody know?

"Does anybody know" what?  As Dan G. said, logs are automatically rotated and pruned, which should keep them in check.  I don't know a way of stopping logging completely, though I suppose killing the syslog daemon would stop a lot of it...

There's a lot that isn't in the manual, but check the 'view logs' admin pane and you will see the last few days logs with date suffixes. You will also notice the older logs disappear from the list, so I assume they are being deleted.

I would keep them on. You just don't know when you will need them. That is the point.
