I want to put a e-smith server in an NT domain as just a print server. Does anyone know if I can do that with out having to make permissions on the e-smith server for the users in my domain? (If the e-smith is set not to be a domain controler?)

I have 500 users and don't want to have to make any accounts on my e-smith server for people to print?

You want SME to act as only a print server ?!
SME does more than this and actually is not designed to be only a print server...
I would recommend that you install another distro to do this.

The reason I want to use it is because the samba is configured nice for adding print drivers etc. I don't want to go through the manual config of sambe like I would if I used straight Red Hat.

I have been using E-smith for a long time, the only reason I posed this question is because I am being lazy and don't feel like testing it myself. I was hoping someone may already be doing this and I could get and easy answer.

Thanks though for you help.

Very simple, I have 500 users and I don't want to have to reboot the server every other week or so and I don't want to defrag it once a week.

I have put up Linux servers before for printing. I have one up now at another site and it has not been rebooted for 2 years. That is what I am talking about...

When we were using NT at this site we rebooted the servers (We had 2 at the time) every week. When 2000 came out I got it down to one server but I still have reboot it more then I want! Yuck!

You need a seperate client to use it and on top of that you can't upload printer drivers etc so they can download to the clients when they connect.

I think what you are looking for is to set the SAMBA server to use the NT box as the password server.  You need to edit the smb.conf files (not directly, but via a custom template.)

You need to add this:

password server = Your_NT_Server

At least I'm pretty sure that'll work.

Thank you my brother. I knew you could define the PDC and then pull passwords from it. I was hoping that someone would let me know (Like you did) that it would be easy to do in a template. Thanks a lot for everyone's help! :-)

Me Too!.....We run a 2000 domain (hey, it was already there when I started...*shrug*).This thread has just about answered all my questions, since I want to set up SME to host our intranet, student home pages etc, and was worrying about how to use the 2000 DC for logon. But I am REALLY lazy...so Tyrone, when you get it working please let me/us know...and a mini-howto, copy of relevent files etc would be lovely
