Webserver Redirection

Ok. I have just moved from Win2k Server to E-smith Linux. My original web site (the-hairy-one.com) had the open directory on it. So does my new site. Anyway, my problem is that the old site was indexed by a lot of great search engines and im getting hit by them. The old addy of the open dir was
www.the-hairy-one.com/pod.pl?/Place/you/want/togo
. It is not
www.the-hairy-one.com/cgi-bin/pod.pl/place/you/want/togo
. Is there someway i can fix this? Is there a way i can write a PHP script and get apahce to read it, even though its got .pl after it? I cant seem to get .pl files working in apache if not in the cgi-bin directory. Please help! Even if you can tell me where to put the 404 error page so i can change it and make it they way i want it, i would be happy!
Thanks for any info!

Try this thread for modifying the 404 Error page:
