Topic: Net Time issues

Hi:
I've got a little problem which has me stumped. I have a W2K server as a domain controller and an SME box as a gateway. I had been running 5.0, and I moved to 5.1.2 on a faster box by installing 5.1.2 & doing a restore to get my users & email moved over. That worked well. However, I have also been using the SME machine as a time server and now when I run "net time \gateway /set" I get the message "System error 5 has occurred. Access is denied."  From what I can find this is an authentication error. Has anyone else come across this? As far as I can tell my smb.conf looks ok, but there must be something I'm missing; maybe the way I upgraded messed up a configuration. Any help much appreciated.

There have been many reports of vulnerabilities in ntpd. I strongly recommend you rely on your hardware clock.

The error described is not related to ntp since it is using the windows netbios facility instead.  I'm not sure which version made the change but 5.1.2 does not allow any access from Windows accounts that don't have a matching account on the SME server.  If you can map a drive you should be able to access the time service.

Thanks Les. Since I haven't created users other than email on this server maybe that's it. It must have changed between 5.0 & 5.1.2.

I've got another net time issue: I can use "net time \gateway /set" from my W2000 machine, but the time the gateway offers is GMT -0400, while the server is set to GMT +0100.

I've tried setting the server's time manually in the admin screens, and I've also tried using some W-European ntp servers to set the gateway's time on.

It shows the correct GMT +0100 time on the admin web interface, but still gives GMT -0400 when I access the gateway with net time from the network.

Does anyone have any idea how I can make my SME 5.1.2 server forget all about Mitel's time zone? I'm really not interested in the current time at Mitel's offices.
