Local NIC randomly stops working

http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=3558.msg12080#msg12080 is the original thread. We're still running into the problem every now and then, and I'd like to find out what's causing it.

We're using a Netgear FA310TX for the LAN NIC. It was detected as a Lite-On LNE100TX, with the Tulip driver. It will usually go several weeks or more without a problem. Then suddenly it just stops working. You can't ping to or from the LAN NIC with client PCs on the LAN. You can access the internet from the SME, and the outside can access the web and mail servers on the SME. Yesterday, it stopped working again several minutes after rebooting. While trying to ping, the LEDs on the NIC were still working, which makes me think it's a software problem rather than hardware.

I haven't found anything that would seem to cause the problem, but is there anything I can look for? Drivers or other files I can update? It was originally a 4.x, and later upgraded to 5.0.  I'm at Update 4 now. Keep it simple for this Linux newbie. Step-by-step instructions are best...
