Topic: SME Blocking VPN Connections??

Hi,

I have two sites, each with a SME server (5.1.2) each site has serveral machines behind the SME box, this is what I want to do....

I want a machine at site 1, to connect via the server, to the server at site 2. Using a VPN (pptp connection)

When I try this, all I get is "Verifying username & password" then the connection drops.

However if I dial out from the machine at site 1, via ISDN/modem, It connects straight away. (The only difference is, it bypasses the server at site 1) So does SME 5.1.2 block outgoing PPTP connections???

SME does not block outbound PPTP traffic.  

When you say "the only thing different..." are you certain that both client machines are using the same OS and related patches?  Have you made sure that Windows 2k machines are running SP2, and Windows 98 machines have the DUN update?  If a client is running encryption lower the 128-bit, it will fail.  If you haven't noted the relevant section in the user doc, have a look here:  http://www.e-smith.org/docs/manual/5.1/userguidesme.html#pptp

If you have any client-side issues, that should clear them up.

Even if a Win9x client has the updated DUN, try reinstalling it. That's solved weird PPTP problems for me before...

All of the workstations are using Windows XP PRO, and they all have the XP patches installed.

Did you ever get this resolved?  I'm experiencing the same thing with Windows 2000 machines.  They used to work and then suddenly I can't get through.
