Login Delay

I have an E-Smith server 5.1.2 (server/gateway) installed at my ISP. They tell that there is a T connection then a Cisco2600 router then a hub then my box.

There are 2 NIC's in the box. The LAN card is hooked to a small hub with no other connections (So when esmith starts it thinks there is a network there) the WAN card is hooked to the hub leading to the Cisco router.

When I login (externally) to FTP or email it takes 30 seconds before the machine authenticates. By watching the progress with the FTP client or email client you can plainly see that connection happens almost immediately. For some reason it takes an extra 25 - 35 seconds to authenticate and fully connect.

Is this 30 second delay something that is programmed in to server? Or is there another problem that causes this. I have searched over this forum for quite a while now and I have found some people having this problem from the internal network. I used some of the info from those posts and did some looking around. I do not see anything that looks out of the ordinary with any of the .conf files.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

This happens because of the reverse look-up (DNS). If you add your host name and IP in /etc/hosts you will have no more delays. This is the same for local networks too.
