NT/2000 to SME
« on: June 03, 2002, 01:44:15 PM »
Hi!,
I'm interested in installing in my server (at the moment with Windows NT) the SME Mitel.
It would need that somebody with experience in this subject could give some advice me.
It would need to know, if the use of samba as PDC is totally correct, the permissions of files, etc...  I have read in the page of samba documentation on the subject, but I would like, that somebody that has passed its server NT/2000 to the SME, commented some to me of its experiences.
Also, I would like that they explained to me, if I can mount 4 discs with mirroring.  Example:  System:  1 + 1 (Raid 1) and Data:  1 + 1(Raid 1) Total:  4 Discs
Thanks in advance.

Picu,

If you intend to convert totally from NT/2000 then get a couple of old computers if possible and just build a 2 box client/server network for testing.

It's far easier to setup a SME box than NT/2000 if you have some standard hardware, but it can be steep learning curve if you know nothing of linux/unix.

Re PDC - I don't know the full ins and outs of PDC - you need to get an answer from someone more knowledgeable than me.

If you are trying to install install the SME server into an exisiting NT network to co-exist, you need to have a good read through all the forums & FAQ first. It can be done but I think that you really need to know what you are doing.

Mirrored drives - you can easily mirror two drives, just select that option during the install, but I am not sure about 4.

I think that when the system installs, it only uses one drive for both system and data and I don't believe that you can tell it to use one drive for the system and one for the data. Certainly if you install onto one drive, you can then add a second just for data - there are posts in the forums on how to do it.
